Week 2: What is text?

What is a text?
In many terms, described that a text is a symbol that transmit a message in the form of information. Text, on its own, it may not provide a physical form when it comes to providing a medium, instead it provided with terms in a form of recognizable message with a form of content. Text itself was not limited to mere writings, calculation, algorithms, alphabets or numbers, text itself could be represented in other form as well, such as the arrangement of buildings, objects, logo from certain brand, color and style of a painting or clothing, types of vector art could also be known as “text”.
Text, on another term can be represented as a translation, alteration, recognizable, and yet distinguishable form that represent a certain context. For example, for normal person, a traffic light is a standing pole with three colors light, green as go, yellow as careful, and red as stop. Yet this simple representation is recognizable everywhere, and everyone who sees it easily know what to do when the traffic lights change its color lights, it represent as a “text” with translation, and recognition of its existence as a near universal object of the world.
If “text” existed as a word, such as our normal English is also a near universal form of “text”. Despite it’s a common language, it represents what many on this world as a easily recognized word, and in a another word, a form of “text”.
All the statement and example given above shared one thing in common, it’s their distinguishable, recognizable and unique, yet existed in a conventional, normal, and usually take for granted form of “text”.

  2. Text is a medium of message that exists since 'stone age' until now it still
crucial thing in human life. Defination of text is not just couple words of letters
(like what Zhi wei and Bisnu said in post above), but text also brings new meaning to human mind as that new meaning is understand by them.
Like example the word "Beatle" if we say it in context of music people will reffer it to a famous British music band. But in context of car it will be a name of wokswagon car. And the meanning of "Beatle" will different in context of insect.
